LEADERSHIP IS A CALLING

Leadership is a calling to inspire others...

"Leadership is about helping other people become the best version of themselves, so they can do their life's best work, while in your care and beyond."
- Dave Clare

This says that I care about you as a human first, employee second.

This says that you don't need a position or title to demonstrate leadership.

Have you noticed that virtually every leader in the world doesn't have the word LEADER in their job title? Yet, virtually every manager has the word MANAGER in theirs?

This is why I believe that leadership isn't really a position or job title. It's a belief, a calling, a way of thinking, an inspirational pursuit to make a difference in this world (or your part of it). Yes, your part of it. It doesn't have to make a dent in the universe, It doesn't have to advance the advent of sustainable transportation or colonization of Mars, it just has to make a real difference to the world that you see...your part of it.

What your part of it is up to you. It could be your geographic location, industry, consumers etc. YOU CHOOSE. Just make sure it bends reality in that space, otherwise it won't really be inspiring.

If that's what leadership is all about, then what makes an outstanding leader?

If you were to think of the most outstanding leaders you've ever known or read about, past or present, what would you say were their outstanding qualities? Grab a piece of paper right now and write them down. Now take a look at that list and circle all the ones that you think are ATTITUDES? What percentage of them did you notice were more attitude than skill?

Leadership is primarily an ATTITUDE. Attitude is a habit of thinking.

"I would challenge that leadership is more about attitude than a skill"
- Dave Clare

Anyone can have a VISION of the world. It takes leadership to rally people, create a yearning for that future state and stay the course through a values-based framework driven by purpose. Leaders will require a collection of qualities to do this, they don't need a collection of titles.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more and do more, you are a leader."
- John Quincy Adams

So leadership is to see a world that doesn't yet exist and pursue that with every fibre of your being, so much so, many others will be inspired to join you on bending reality. To do this you will need to possess many outstanding qualities, none of which is a job title...just saying.

What do you think?
