LEADERSHIP vs FOLLOWERSHIP

This is an epic scene in the movie, Remember the Titans.

The exchange between the captain and the defensive player highlights the importance of leadership and its impact on the attitudes and behaviors of team members.

This lesson is applicable to business leadership as well. Here are a few key takeaways:

  1. Lead by example: As a business leader, your behavior and attitude will set the tone for your team. Demonstrating a positive and proactive attitude encourages your team members to adopt the same mindset.
  2. Foster a positive work environment: A positive work environment can improve employee morale, productivity, and overall job satisfaction. Be mindful of the atmosphere you create and encourage open communication, collaboration, and respect.
  3. Recognize the importance of communication: Effective communication is key to understanding and addressing the concerns and needs of your team members. Make sure you're approachable and open to feedback, and be proactive in addressing any issues that arise.
  4. Adapt your leadership style: Different team members may require different types of leadership, and as a leader, it's essential to be adaptable and flexible. Assess each individual's needs and tailor your approach accordingly to get the best results.
  5. Empower your team: Encourage autonomy and responsibility among your team members by giving them the tools and resources (#purpose and #values), they need to succeed. This will foster a sense of ownership and pride in their work, leading to better results and a more engaged team.
  6. Hold yourself accountable: As a leader, you must take responsibility for both your successes and failures. This will build trust and credibility with your team, and encourage them to take ownership of their own performance as well.

Do you remember the iconic scene from the movie Spartacus?

"I am Spartacus"

is a famous quote from the 1960 film, where a group of Roman slaves, led by the gladiator Spartacus, rebel against their oppressors.

When the Roman general demands that Spartacus identify himself so that he can be executed, his fellow gladiators stand up one by one and declare, "I am Spartacus." This powerful act of solidarity and unity is an important lesson for business leaders.

You will get the followership that your leadership creates.

You can't lead by the position of "I'm the boss" and expect empowerment from your team.

You can't lead by the process of rules and bureaucracy and expect commitment.

Have a look at these leadership styles. Where are you? Then look at what followership it creates.
